The standoff between the Jharkhand government and protesting students over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) continues, with no immediate resolution in sight after talks failed to produce an agreement. On Sunday, protesting students announced that they would hold a peaceful ‘Vidhan Sabha gherao’ (Assembly march) on Monday and appealed to students from across the state to join the protest, despite the government’s claim that they accepted 98 per cent of their demands.

The central government has decided to extend the tenure of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Rahul Navin by one year, extending his working period till August 2027. According to an order issued on August 8, 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension of Rahul Navin, IRS (IT:93074), for one year beyond August 13, 2026, until August 13, 2027. Mumbai star batter Sarfaraz Khan has been named as the replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan in India’s squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a media release. Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday while she was on her way to the residence of a deceased TMC worker, with protesters raising ‘chor’ (thief) slogans and allegedly smearing mud on her car. The incident took place in Bijpur, where a group of protesters gathered around Banerjee’s vehicle as she travelled to meet the family of the deceased party worker.

The government on Saturday allayed fears over the charges on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions for end users, stating that the transactions will not attract any extra charges for users and small merchants. The Finance Ministry also stated that the vast majority of transactions will also remain free for the merchants.
